March 30: Tri-University Conference for the Trans/Disciplinary Study of Sport

The School of Physical Activity and Educational Services, the Todd A. Bell National Resource Center on the African American Male and the Women's Place are hosting the inaugural Tri-University Conference, "Humanistic Foundations: Historical, Philosophical and Sociocultural Studies of Sport" on Friday, March 30, in the Barbie Tootle Room at the Ohio Union at Ohio State University. Registration begins at 7:30 a. m. with presentations throughout the day.

Dr. Dennis Gildea Visits Ohio State's Sport Humanities Program



On Friday, February 17, Dr. Dennis Gildea visited Ohio State University and the Sport Humanities Program. Dr. Gildea is a former news reporter, sportswriter and journalist who received his PhD at Penn State University in Mass Communications in 1988. He currently works at Springfield College as an Associate Professor of Communications teaching classes on journalism, sports and the media, and the athlete in literature, among many others. He is published in numerous journals and is a former winner of the North American Society for Sport History Graduate Student Essay Award (1992).

Dr. Gildea discussed styles of writing for the various genres in sport studies and shared his piece entitled "Charlie: A Tribute and a Prayer" along with his forthcoming work on Clair Bee. He also received some Ohio State memorabilia to remember the visit!

Tri-University Conference for the Trans/Disciplinary Study of Sport

The inaugural Tri-University Conference for the Trans/Disciplinary Study of Sport will be hosted by the Sport Humanities program at Ohio State University on March 30, 2012. The conference is entitled "Humanistic Foundations: Historical, Philosophical and Sociocultural Studies of Sport."

This conference is a collaborative effort designed to promote scholarship in the historical, philosophical and sociocultural study of sport. A student-led initiative of Ohio State University, Penn State University and the University of Western Ontario, the annual gathering aims to strengthen academic community and foster intellectual development in sport studies.

Dr. Sarah Fields Wins OSU Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching!

As the title states, Executive Vice President and Provost Joseph Alutto and Archie Griffin presented Dr. Sarah Fields with the Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching today in a surprise ceremony. Congratulations to Dr. Fields and go team Sport Humanities!!
